Jackass 3D

Yes, the stunts are crazy, yes, theses guys are borderline insane, yes some of the skits are in very bad taste.  That being said, I laughed my ass off.  If you enjoyed the other Jackass movies, this one won't let you down.

Secretariat

This movie is one of those that can be enjoyed by adults and children alike.  The story is well told while managing to be exciting and interesting as well.  The only problem with movies like this is you know the ending before it ends.

Wall Street - Money Never Sleeps

It was great to see an icon of the 80's make another screen appearance.  Pretty well done, leaves you guessing about the state of Gordon Gekko's soul till the end.  Nice cameo by Charlie Sheen as Bud Fox as well.  Not as good as the first, but still pretty good.

The American

I often like movies that are independent or have that independent feel.  They often have good characters and a great story.  I can sum up this one in one word, BORING.  The plot was slow and I really didn't get into any of the characters, it was just like they were kinda there.  The only one that was fairly interesting was the prostitute that George Clooney had a relationship with.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

It's just what you'd expect from a movie like this, lots of action and gore.  If you liked the other Resident Evil movies, you'll probably like this one too, I know I did.

Machete

I just hate it when a movie that markets itself as an action flick decided to try and make a political statement.  If you want to make a movie and make a statement, there's plenty of ways to do it that aren't so in your face.  Machete is decent on the action, plenty of blood and guts as well.  Normally I probably would have enjoyed this, except for it's need to push an agenda.  The whole thing revolves around illegal aliens and drug lords.  The movie made it abundantly clear that illegals are just honest, simple, decent, exploited folks who have done nothing wrong while anyone who wants a secure border is nothing but a redneck racist or has "other" motives.  Guess they're entitled to their opinion, but they won't be getting anymore of my money.

The Last Exorcism

Another movie that tries to take advantage of the genre of Blair Witch Project.  It's supposedly a documentary about a preacher who takes a film crew to capture an exorcism.  There's a few chilling parts, but overall, an average movie at best.  It's too bad, because it could have been a great one.

Takers

This was a pretty good action/heist movie.  It should get some attention because it stars R&B singer Chris Brown and rapper T.I.  Definitely one to check out when it hits the video rentals.

Piranha 3D

Once in a great while a movie comes out that is really bad, but you can't help but love it.  This is one of those movies.  It's a throw back to the 80's slasher flicks that didn't care too much about the story, but relied on blood, guts, and nudity to entertain.  If your a fan of blood and guts (and alot of nudity), then this is one for you.

Lottery Ticket

It's nice to finally have a comedy that actually made me laugh.  The story was one that everyone can relate to and the characters seemed to act like many of us would (or how people we know would).

The Expendables

I've been looking forward to this movie for a long time.  It was nice to see a "throw back" movie where the story and plot were just enough to keep the movie moving along while the real emphasis was fighting, shooting, killing, and things blowing up.  For those of you that appreciate the old school action flicks, you'll love it.  The scene with Arnold, Bruce, and Sly was only a few minutes, but was the highlight of the movie.

The Other Guys

Just a side note, there seems to be a real lack of comedies these days that are actually funny.  I have a great sense of humor, but I find most of the movies that are passing themselves off as a comedy are far from it.  This movie is no exception.  There are some funny moments and good jokes, but there's way too much time in between those that is filled with drivel.  This movie also made a fatal mistake at the end, it decided to use the credits to make a purely political statement.  It's supposed to be a comedy for God's sake, why the writer/director/producer decided to use it as a political platform is beyond me.

Dinner for Schmucks

I hate movies like this. Parts of it are really funny while other parts are so not funny it makes your head spin. The premise of the movie sounded good so I went to check it out. Along with the big gap in funny, the actual dinner only made up about 15-20 minutes of the movie. It should have been called "Starting a relationship with a Schmuck then taking him to a short dinner".

Salt

The first part of this movie was simply OK, some decent action and a good story. The last third was very good, plot twists and a good resolution to the story. Overall, it was pretty enjoyable and Angelina proved that she's still more than capable of still doing a good action flick. If you like spy action/thrillers, it's a MUCH better option than Knight and Day.

Inception

Once in a while, you see a movie that you wish wouldn't stop. This is one of those. Great story, great acting, great effects, what more do you want? It's kind of a blend of mystery, suspense, action, and sci-fi. Add in a great ending, and you have one of the most mind blowing movies in years.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

I know, most of the critics didn't like this movie. I know it didn't do particularly well at the box office, but that doesn't change the fact that I really liked this movie. Decent story, funny, exciting, some really good actors, what more do you want.

Predators

Yes, it's cheesy and yes, it's fairly predictable. That being said, I still liked this movie. I've liked all the Predator movies. They're fun, action packed, and enjoyable. If you liked the others, you'll probably like this one.

The Last Airbender

I actually kinda liked this movie. I never watched the show on TV, so I didn't know quite what to expect, but anytime you can have a hybrid of action, fantasy, and kung-fu, I'm in. If you're expecting an outcome in this movie, forget it, it's set up for several sequels to finish off the story. The only complaint I'd have is the 3D effects were average at best.

Knight and Day

I heard some good things about this movie, and I heard some bad things as well. The bad things are closer to the truth. Not much chemistry between Cameron and Tom, a bland story, and not much for excitement in the action scenes. Didn't seem like a movie on it's own, but rather an unadvertised clone of Mission Impossible.

Grown Ups

I was worried about how they were going to let these 5 funny guys share the spotlight, jokes, etc. They managed to do a pretty good job. The movie is actually funnier than I expected it to be. A decent choice for a date movie or something to take teen aged kids to.

Toy Story 3

It's nice to see that movies can be made that are funny, enjoyable, and good family movies. Toy Story 3 fits this bill. The story is good, the characters that we've all grown to love are exactly what you'd expect. It could be a little scary for really young kids at times, but overall, a great movie.

Karate Kid

Sometimes in a rare moment, remakes are better than the original. Most of the time, remakes are lacking to say the least. I'm glad to say that this one falls into the first category. The movie is has a different take than the first (being in China), but the basics are the same. Jaden Smith is very good, and Jackie Chan is his usual likable and great.

Get Him to the Greek

I like comedies. I consider myself to have a good sense of humor. That being said, I'm at a loss as to why some of the gags in this movie were considered funny. Don't get me wrong, there were parts that were very funny. Unfortunately, there were more than a couple of parts that were, shall we say, uncomfortable and not funny even though they thought they were. Diddy is awesome in this, easily the best character in the movie.

A-Team

I know the critics panned this movie, but I enjoyed it. It's one of those movies that's outrageous and fun. The characters were well cast, and did a good job bring back memories of the old TV show.

Killers

I have to admit, I'm a fan of Katherine Heigl. She's a pretty good actress, funny, very good looking, and seemingly likable. That likability translates well in her movies for me. By no means is this a perfect movie, but it's enjoyable. It's one of those movies that would be a good choice for a date movie, just enough romantic comedy for women to like it, and just enough action for guys to like it.

Splice

Best way to sum up this movie is same story, different boogie man. The template it the same, evil/bad/misguided scientists experiment with (fill in your favorite technology here) and something tragic happens. You've seen this before; AI, nuclear energy, toxic pollution, global warming or in this case genetic research. Too bad originality wasn't involved in this movie.

Prince of Persia

OK, this movie isn't going to win any big awards, but who cares. It's nice to see that movies can be made that are entertaining and fun, something that you can sit down and enjoy for 2 hours. Too bad Hollywood doesn't make a few more of these.

MacGruber

I always thought the worst movie ever made was "Dude, Where's my Car?", that is until I had the bad fortune to see MacGruber. To describe it as terrible would be an insult to all the terrible things in the world. Makes me wonder if something this bad gets made, how bad are the scripts that get rejected?

Shrek Forever After

It's always good to see a movie that everyone can enjoy. Good story, characters we all love, happy ending. It's not a prefect movie, but it's nice. Everyone will enjoy it. Take the kids and have a good time.

Robin Hood

I would rate this movie as one of those that was pretty good, but should have been better. A great cast and an interesting story that just didn't seem to come together as well as it should have. It is worth checking out if you can catch a matinee or at a discount theater.

Iron Man II

I like super hero movies. If you think about it, there really haven't been too many bad movies based on super heroes or comic books. The exceptions would be the really old version of Captain America and the first Incredible Hulk. Iron Man II is exciting, fun, humor filled, and very enjoyable. Definitely worth seeing in the theater and even a Blu-Ray purchase when it comes out.

Nightmare on Elm Street

I'm old enough to have seen the original in the theater and actually kinda liked it. I'm not a big fan of remakes such as this. There's nothing really new here. You know the story, you know what's going to happen, so it takes away from the effectiveness. I did think this version was a little darker than the original, but not enough difference to make it worth seeing.

The Losers

It's nice to go see a movie that doesn't take itself seriously and allows you to just have fun. This movie won't win any Oscars, but it does provide entertainment. The action scenes were good and the characters were all likable. Maybe not one you'd pay full price to see, but worth renting.

Kick-Ass

I was suprised at the R rating, but after seeing it, I can see why, it's violent and kinda bloody at times. That didn't take away from how much fun the movie was. Good story that progressed well. A lot of fun too. I probably wouldn't take anyone younger that 13 or so to see it because of the violence and swearing, but everyone else should enjoy it. On another note, Hit Girl is a bad ass little chick.

Date Night

I think this movie kinda got lost when deciding what it wanted to be, a romance or a comedy. It wasn't great at either, but it wasn't bad at either. The story was OK. Tina Fey and Steve Carell were both very likable. Probably be a pretty good choice for a date movie.

2.5 of 5 stars

Clash of the Titans

Being a fan of the original, I didn't quite know what to expect. I'd have to say that overall, the movie was pretty good. The story didn't keep to the original, but was good none the less. I liked the small tribute they did to the original as well (I won't give it away). The 3-D effects weren't quite as good as Avatar, but much better that Alice in Wonderland. This is one of those movies that pretty much has to be seen in 3-D to appreciate the special effects.

How to Train Your Dragon

Yes, it's animated. Yes, it's primarily for kids. That being said, I really enjoyed this movie. It's funny, clever, and even manages to pull at your heart strings from time to time. Few movies are bot enjoyable for kids and adults alike. This is definitely one of them.

The Ghost Writer

I always like a suspense movie that keeps your interest and throws in a plot twist at the end just to see if you were paying attention. This movie fits that bill. Good story, well acted, and definitely worth checking out.

Shutter Island

I love it when a movie keeps you thinking and wondering how it will turn out. A movie that not only keeps your interest, but also leaves you wanting more. This is one of those movies. A great cast, fantastic story, and overall, very well done. If you like suspense/thrillers, then you'll love this one.

4.5 of 5 stars

Repo Men

Yet another example of a movie that should have been great, but came up short. Great story, great actors, but lacking in punch. As I was watching this, I kept on hoping and cheering that it would kick into gear and get better, but it didn't. Except for a twist at the end, the movie just seemed to be average. A good option for your Netflix cue, but I wouldn't waste $10 at the theater.

2.5 of 5 stars.

The Bounty Hunter

Let me start out by saying that I'm a fan of Gerard Butler and I love Jennifer Aniston, that being said, I was disappointed by this movie. It wasn't overly funny, romantic, or exciting. There just didn't seem to be any chemistry between Gerard and Jennifer (unlike the great chemistry in The Ugly Truth between Butler and Katherine Heigl). One left the theater thinking "I guess it was OK".

2 of 5 stars.

Alice in Wonderland

I really expected this to be a great movie. Effects looked good, great cast, classic story. Boy was I disappointed. The 3-D effects were average at best. The story seemed to remind me of something else, oh yeah, the Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe (which was a much better movie). While Johnny Depp was great, the rest of the movie was just kinda blah. Might be worth checking out on Netflix, but not in the theater.

Why I'm here

It occurred to me one day that there are hundreds of movie reviewers that seem to think that if a movie isn't "Oscar Quality", then it's somehow not worthy. I'm simply here to review movies for average people. I'm not so much worried about the lighting, design, or costumes, rather did the movie do a good job at ENTERTAINING! Afterall, that's what really counts. My criteria is simple, if a comedy makes me laugh, it's done it's job. Things like that. So if you want reviews based on what regular people base their decisions on, then this is the place.
